Health care coverage is important for good health

One-fifth of Arizona residents do not have health care coverage, which can lead to many unhealthy results:

  • Preventable death: 18,000 deaths in 2002 of people ages 18-64 could have been prevented if the people had health insurance.
  • Delayed treatment: People without health insurance are almost twice as likely as insured people to delay getting needed medical care.
  • No medical care: Children without coverage often go without medical care for common childhood illnesses, such as earaches.
If private health insurance is not an option for you, here is a glance at some available public coverage options:


Program Who it covers
Indian Health Service (IHS) Covers American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the U.S. Members of federally recognized American Indian and Alaskan Native Tribes and their descendants qualify for IHS. Members may also enroll in AHCCCS or KidsCare.
Medicaid (called AHCCCS) Covers mostly women, children, parents of dependent children, disabled, pregnant women, and the elderly. Applicants must meet financial eligibility requirements and be a United States citizen or qualified legal resident to qualify for full medical benefits.
Medicare Covers people 65 years or older who are U.S. citizens or legal residents living in the U.S. for 5 years in a row. Most people who qualify for cash benefits under Social Security Disability Insurance can obtain Medicare-covered services after a 2-year wait.
State Children’s Health Insurance Program or SCHIP
(called KidsCare)
Covers children in families with incomes up to approximately $40,000. Applicants must meet financial eligibility requirements and be a United States citizen or qualified legal resident to qualify for full medical benefits. Members are required to pay a monthly premium. Veterans Administration Provides coverage to veterans, family members, or survivors of veterans under defined eligibility requirements.
